COP26 - day 1 - London to Oxford

Now that I have largely recovered from a week of cycling, and not much else, I can find the energy to do a daily write up. Above you can see the mileage of the first day, which includes getting to and from my hotels. I decided to stay the night before in Southwark to make Day 1 easier and as you can see to get to lunch at Wendover there was a bit of climbing up the Chilterns. After lunch just an easy 30 miles of pedalling to get to Oxford. It being day 1 everyone was very excited and full of pedalling. I think that 77 miles was the furthest I cycled in one day in 2020 so I was starting quite close to my limit.

In the picture below I am looking over the left shoulder of the man in yellow who has his right arm in the air.

If you find yourself in Vauxhall in need of tea and cake, go to the Tea House Theatre.

The following pictures are in reverse order but I am sure you can think backwards.

Some cyclists rode through this, I took the raised path on the right.

This trail kept us away from traffic, the entry was on the opposite side of the road to where we expected but with 150 riders swarming all over the route you are never lost for long.
Such luck, a steam train near the disused railway track.

The first lunch, a bean chilli with rice and a flapjack. It was good and went down well and sustained us for the afternoon.
Wendover Woods has had a lot of investment, there is room for lots of walkers and cyclists.

This was earlier, Kristien with her e-bike 'the beast' for her to send to her husband to let him know she was ok but the sun was in the wrong place. We were in the grounds of The Grove at Watford, a public road runs right past it, a bit of climb.
This is the hotel itself, a grand building.

My first Premier Inn breakfast, £10. Pretty good for a large chain hotel. It certainly helped me pedal through the morning.

So that was day 1. I felt ok. Day 2 coming up after a sleep and a Tesco Extra value meal as nowhere was open for a sit down meal in our corner of Oxford on a Sunday evening.
