Beverley to Barnet - the final frontier

Here we go then, the final instalment of my ride home. Beverley to Barnet in 6 days, hardly worth getting the car out for.

Some photos are out of time order but I am sure you can flex your brain. This is me arriving home.

Very nice cafe at which to stop. Women on Wheels from Beverley were there in force.

A Covid testing station just north of the Humber Birdge, it was very quiet apart from an officious security guard who told me I couldn't photograph a 'government site' so I said I was deleting the photograph and he sodded off, but of course I didn't.
The Humber Bridge.
A long way down to the 'beach'.
Lovely views
Standard Sustrans mile marker, in yellow this time.
Skegness beach was not busy at 08:30

I can't remember why I took this photo? although it might have been for the arrow straight road of which the 7 mile straight is one of the best known.
Is Lincolnshire flat? Yes, in parts.
If you forget to stop at the end of a long straight you will need a new car.
Sustrans cycle routes sometimes use former railways.

Sculpture

The hamlet of Wasps Nest which I visited because a friend and I saw it on a map. Barely bigger than a Wasps Nest.

Lovely sunflowers as a field margin.

Following the river Witham from Lincoln to Boston offered me a host of information boards
 This statue was of Barley

The fantastic headboard in Spalding. Not serving dinner on a Sunday evening though so Tesco Local it was. The snooker final was on, for one frame, so I had to drown my sorrows in wine and beer, shame.

Lovely properties in Spalding.

Drains were cut in straight lines whenever possible
I think they missed a trick. I would have opted for twinning with Porto.
I can't resist a windmill. This one is a private residence, I chose to wait until the occupiers went indoors.
Another interesting town
Grafham Water, just me on the path, so tranquil.

My co-director was tracking my location on google maps. At one point she messaged me 'are you OK? you seem to be in a field'. Amusingly, I was, this was the Sustrans route, along a farm track.

I will be going here for a walk one day.
Welcome home, the M25 as I pedalled back from Ridge, M25 at a standstill. It is quicker by bike.
Going back in time, me leaving Edinburgh, just 12 days to Barnet from there, 12 days, seems like my new normal.
That's all folks.

The end.

Until the next odyssey.

Long ride home - Edinburgh to Beverley

I took fewer photographs on leaving Edinburgh and sent my compact SLR home with my friends so these ones are all taken with the phone, still reasonable quality though I think.

Lovely coast at Musellborough

Brutal architecture contrasting with nature.
Fabulous views down the east Coast

A bridge over a bridge
The border between Scotland and England
The wall is on the border

Typical limited menu I have seen on muy travels. The duo of salmon and the sea bass were both very good.
Sorry, finger slightly in the way. Berwick upon Tweed I think.

The view from the adjacent bridge
The Northumberland coast is lovely

A stiff climb on a poor surface to get up onto the cliffs as you leave Berwick upon Tweed on Sustrans route 1.

Sustrans routes vary in quality from smooth tarmac to grass tracks. As I am riding a hybrid it can cope.

Tynemouth Priory and Castle

Can't ignore a windmill

An unusual sculpture
Leaving County Durham over this bridge

A quiet covid testing centre
Nice curves on the bridge
Middlesborough in the throes of lots of new building
The hydraulic clock tower which I much prefer
Taken from the same spot in different directions

The view from my window in Whitby

Whitby Harbour

Dustbin lorry providing useful scale

After leaving Whitby, a lovely ride.
Fylingdales
Friends are looking after my house and garden. Clearly doing a good job.
Going over the Humber Bridge today, got to be worth a photo or two.
